Kine Per week told you «The newest robust ‘crooks slip out’ was peopled having a colorful diversity off essential and you can arresting characters, and these, skilfully controlled from the blogger and you may manager, allow the film to tread water effortlessly. It is merely with the become that it starts to fall apart, however the smack-up finale rescues they about ‘red’. Ingeniously staged and you will wisely dialogued, it’ll have no great complications in way of life off their very ugly name.» [ 8 ]
Monthly Motion picture Bulletin told you «The movie motions from the a quick pace, the fresh conversation was smooth and you may characterisations basically active. Cock Powell and you can Evelyn Keyes lead this new cast skillfully, as the investigator is actually played with significant aplomb because of the that individual personality, Lee J. Cobb.» [ nine ]
Richard Brody regarding the The new Yorker noted «This terse and taut film noir try predicated on the latest romantic and you may elite disputes of the title reputation, the unlawful mastermind (played from the Knob Powell) trailing an elegant illegal casino. New film’s publisher and movie director, Robert Rossen, creates a multidimensional chess games, having mortal limits, ranging from Johnny, their boss (Thomas Gomez), their boss’s spouse (Ellen Received), a great cagey cops inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you will a good scuffling celebrity (Evelyn Keyes) whoever aunt (Nina Foch) spent some time working on gambling establishment and old an excellent corrupt investigator (Jim Bannon). The newest caustically epigrammatic software, new cast’s suavely controlled body language of like and danger, and you will Rossen’s thrillingly restrained and you will fashionably assertive photos (together with their governmental conscience) get this pugnacious yet detailed spectacle a low profile antique of your style.» [ ten ]

Picture keeps activity and you may suspense, and particular short matches of humor to provide taste. Ace activities of the Manhood Powell, since a betting household overseer, and Lee J. Cobb, as an authorities inspector, also up the get . As the area employs a familiar pattern, the latest characterizations are fresh plus the shows suitable so you can overbalance. Dialogue is terse and you may topical, preventing the sentimental, phoney contact. Strange digital camera bases arrive once in a while so you’re able to heighten desire and you may temporarily stop the attention. Good teamplay from the Robert Rossen, doubling as manager-scripter, and you can Milton Holmes, brand-new publisher and member music producer, in addition to aids in making this a softer development.» [ eleven ]

Its generally a matter of seeing Mr. Powell go through his paces stylishly when you are a massive throw of stars and stars promote him traditional help. Evelyn Keyes takes on the nice little lady who brings about the fresh best in your and you may Ellen Received ‘s the smooth and you will slinky vixen just who will get him with the jams. Thomas Gomez is actually fatty just like the villain and Lee J. Cobb does an alternate ready trip while the an exhausted cops inspector just who in the end shuts the actual situation. Significant amounts of ingesting and you will puffing is performed by all concerned.» [ several ]
